Located in Kwale County, South Coast, Shimba Hills Reserve stands as one of the most expansive coastal forests in the region, second only to the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. Abundant in diverse plant life and wildlife, it boasts the highest concentration of African elephants in Kenya.
Among the various animal species inhabiting this area, you can find;
- Sable antelope,
- elephant shrew,
- bushy-tailed mongoose,
- Buffalos
as well as a variety of small mammals like fruit bats. The forest is recognized as an important bird area, teeming with a plethora of forest bird species. Additionally, the grasslands within the reserve are home to localized species including the red-necked Spur fowl, Croaking Cisticola, and Zanzibar Red Bishop. Adding to its picturesque appeal are the breathtaking Sheldrick Falls and the dense Mwaluganje Forest, both of which are found within the reserve. Furthermore, the reserve provides four campsites for visitors to enjoy.
