Day 1
Nairobi - Lake Baringo
Leave Nairobi early in the morning for Baringo via Rift Valley. Brief stop at the Great Rift Valley View Point for scenic views of escarpments and Mt Longonot. Proceed towards the floor via Nakuru town. Proceed to Lake Baringo with picnic lunch en route arriving later in the afternoon at our camp site just by Lake Baringo. Lake Baringo is a renowned birding location in Kenya, boasting over 500 species of bird. It is one of only 2 fresh water lakes in the Rift Valley system, therefore attracting different wildlife and holding fast as a unique destination. Optional activity here include boat rides or a drive to the nearby Lake Bogoria the new Flamingo home. Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
Day 2
Lake Baringo - Maralal
After breakfast leave Baringo for Maralal with lunch en route. We arrive in the campsite in the late afternoon and set up our campsite. Dinner and overnight at the campsite. Maralal is a frontier town, the beginning of the Great Northern wilderness and the staging post for many great adventures. This simple town is a thriving centre for the local Samburu people, and the streets are always busy with camels, passing warriors and traders. Dinner and overnight stay at the campsite.
Day 3
Maralal - South Horr - Turkana
After breakfast leave Maralal, drive via South Horr to Lake Turkana arriving in lunch time at campsite which is close to Lake Turkana. The Lake is the most saline lake in East Africa and the largest desert lake in the world, surrounded by an arid, seemingly extraterrestrial landscape that is often devoid of life. The long body of Lake Turkana drops down along the Rift Valley from the Ethiopian border, extending 249 kilometers from north to south and 44 km at its widest point with a depth of 30 meters. It is Africa's fourth largest lake, fondly called the Jade Sea because of its breathtaking color. Dinner and overnight stay will be at our campsite.
Day 4
Lake Turkana
After breakfast we head out to explore the villages. Unique to this area is that four tribes, the Rendille, Turkana, Samburu, and El Molo all live in the same town of Loiyangalani. We will focus on visiting multiple tribal villages along the shoreline of the lake, which make for a stunning background and will allow us to experience their ancient fishing practices, lakeside activities and possibly witness the Gabra tribe bringing down their herds of camel for a drink. In the afternoon after lunch we may relax by the shores of Lake Turkana. Optional activities include hiring boats and exploring Lake Turkana via short excursions to spot Nile crocodiles and enjoy the scenic surroundings. Other optional activities may include swimming in the nearby lodge.
Day 5
Lake Turkana - Kalacha
After breakfast we pack our tents and leave for Karacha via Chalbi Desert. Just in case it is wet the road becomes impassable and in this case we will shall use alternative routes. The magical desert is one of the hottest and most arid places in Kenya. Kalacha is home to Gabra community. They are pastrolists who keep cattle and camels. At Kalacha springs, locals, tourists and camels come to quench their thirst. Pastoralists value the never drying Kalacha springs as a source of water for their livestock.
Day 6
Kalacha - Marsabit to Samburu
Leave Karacha in the morning after breakfast and drive past Marsabit. Drive all the way to Samburu with picnic lunch en route. Arriving at the Samburu in the afternoon and proceeding to the campsite. Set up our tents as we enjoy scenic views of Ewaso Nyiro River. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.
Day 7
Samburu National Reserve
We explore the park in morning and afternoon game drives. Due to the temperatures here its is only advisable that we take the option of morning game from 6.30 AM to around 10.00 AM and when it gets hot the animals go deeper in the bush to hide. We return to the camp. Chill around or have an optional visit to a Samburu visit to learn the local community culture, wait for lunch and after lunch we can have another game drive later in the afternoon when temperatures drop. Samburu is home to huge herds of elephants, antelopes, many birds species and more. Be on the lookout for samburu special five i.e Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy Zebra, Gerenuk, Somali Ostrich and Beisa oryx. The big cats are also relatively easy to spot here compared to other parks and if lucky you may spot a pride of lions or a leopard on trees. Catch the DikDik a very small African Antelope that is only 12 inches high. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 8
Samburu - Nairobi
Early morning game drive in the Samburu. Return to the camp for breakfast thereafter and prepare to leave Samburu for Nairobi. We shall have our lunch en route. Arrive at the city later in the afternoon and be dropped at the airport of city hotel.
